A fellow sailor had got in to big trouble whilst leaving Cardiff Barrage.

The gentleman had sailed all the way from Portishead, his boat engine failed and he was left stranded and helpless. Cardiff Cruises secured his vessel to ‘Dame Shirley Bassey’ and towed him safely back into Cardiff Bay.

Cardiff Cruises ship is named after Dame Shirley Bassey

Thanks to all those who entered our competition, we had lots of votes and we’re very pleased with your selection.

Shirley Veronica Bassey found fame in the mid-1950s and was ‘one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain during the last half of the 20th century’. Shirley was the sixth and last child of Eliza Jane Start and Henry Bassey in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales (now called Cardiff Bay). We feel she is the perfect Welsh icon to represent Cardiff Cruises and HMS69 party boats.

Shirley Bassey will adorn our ship shortly, keep a look out……

We’re open to ideas and will be officially launching the ship and announcing the selected name on the Easter weekend.

The Cardiff Cruises new vessel successfully sailed it’s new route yesterday, it was fantastic! The journey begins with a cruise around Cardiff Bay, sailing past all the sights – with lots of photo opportunities, before heading out of the barrage past Penarth Pier.

Whilst out at sea, we had a clear view of Flatholm Island and miles of picturesque coastline. En route back to the Historic Graving Dock in Mermaid Key, passengers get a beautiful view of Cardiff’s fantastic skyline.

Come on Wales!

Newly established Cardiff Cruises will go where no other sightseeing tour operator has gone before, past the Barrage and in to the Bristol Channel. The 90 minute excursion will leave Europe’s largest waterfront development before heading out to sea, weather permitting, past Penarth Pier and towards Flatholm Island. It will then make its return back to Mermaid’s Quay taking in the Cardiff skyline.
